In this Review...

This review of EQUIP PRIME PROTEIN powder focuses on their chocolate flavor. Overall, it's one of the cleanest proteins I've come across. The taste is great, it mixes very good, it's versatile. But, because of all this, it's pricey. That said, I believe it's worth the extra money, especially if you're looking for a clean protein powder that only contains 3 ingredients.

I recently found out that I have some gut health disturbances. One of the first recommendations that my doctor shared with me was to swap my whey-based protein powder for a clean, beef-based protein powder while I work through healing my gut.

Initially, I was a little bummed because my experience with beef protein powders in the past wasn’t the greatest, however, my doctor recommended Equip Prime Protein and promised me that it was a great option.

Although I was a bit hesitant to make the switch because I already have my tried and true favorite protein powders, I decided to go for it in the name of improving my gut health, something that is very important to me.

Based on my doctor’s recommendation, I ordered Equip Prime Protein, and this article will serve as my review. I’ll cover my experience with Equip Protein, what I like about it, and what I don't like about it, and hopefully help you to decide if this protein powder is a good fit for you.

Ratings Breakdown On Equip Prime Protein Powder (Chocolate)

For this review, I will be rating the only flavor that I have tried thus far, chocolate.

Overall Rating: 4.2/5

Prime Protein Powder tastes great, providing us with multiple flavors, it mixes excellent with a variety of methods, it's very effective in terms of hitting protein targets, the price is expensive, but the quality offers high value, and it's versatile, meaning you can bake with it, make shakes, smoothies or ninja creami's.

Ingredients: 4.5/5

Equip is a beef protein isolate that contains only; beef protein isolate, stevia (sweetener), and cocoa powder (flavor). The ingredients in this protein powder are the top reason why my doctor recommended it. She advised that whey protein can wreak havoc on the gut (for some!). Equip is hands-down the cleanest protein powder I have tried as it contains only 3 whole-food ingredients.

Quality & Integrity: 5/5

Just looking at the simple, clean ingredient label, it’s easy to tell that Equip’s Prime Protein is both quality and integral. All Equip protein powders are free of all major allergens and junk (gluten, dairy, soy, hormones, whey, antibiotics, artificial flavors, and preservatives). Equip also third-party tests all of its products, which is a major indicator of quality and integrity in the supplement world.

Flavor & Texture: 4.5/5

The chocolate flavor is excellent. It’s rich and flavorful without giving a fake or overly sweet taste. Texture-wise, this protein provides a smooth, creamy texture, so long as you mix it up really well. There are no binding agents in this protein powder, which means you will need to mix pretty vigorously, but it also means you’re not consuming any chemicals or junk that your body doesn’t need.

Price: 3/5

With a one-time purchase price of $63.99 ($2.13 per serving), it's on the elite-side of protein powder prices. However, as far as clean protein powders go, it can be totally worth the investment. You can also subscribe and save $9.60, which comes out to $54.39 per month.

Calorie & Macro Breakdown: 4/5

Each scoop of Equip protein powder contains 21g of grass-fed beef protein with 100 calories, .5g of fat, and 2g of carbs. The macronutrient profile here is very impressive.

My Experience Using Equip Prime Protein Powder

As soon as my doctor recommended that I try Equip protein powder, I ordered a bag directly from the company’s website. The cost per bag was pretty comparable to the protein powders that I usually purchase, so that wasn’t a surprise – premium quality protein powder comes at a premium price.

I took note that there were 7 flavors to choose from, all of which were pretty standard flavors. I selected chocolate as that’s the flavor that I find myself using the most. I also noticed that there were over 3k reviews with a star rating of 4.9/5, which I thought was telling of the quality of the product.

I received my order within a few days of ordering and I was so excited to try it that I immediately opened it up and gave it a try. My favorite way to drink protein shakes is to make them really thick like a milkshake and eat them with a spoon, so I was really hoping Equip would be conducive to me consuming it that way.

Consistency

I used Equip to make my traditional recipe which includes almond milk, cottage cheese, protein powder, and ice. When I started blending, I noticed that the protein powder seemed to stick to the side of my blender cup a bit more than my normal whey protein powder, but with a little extra blending, it blended in fine.

When I removed the top from my blender cup, I was relieved to see that the consistency looked thick and creamy, just the way I like it!

Compared to my usual whey-based protein, Equip was slightly less cream and a tad more “icy,” but overall it gives a great texture if you’re looking for a thick and creamy shake that you can eat with a spoon.

For testing and review purposes, I also mixed my Equip protein with water in a shaker cup and found that so long as I mixed it really vigorously, it blended well and didn’t leave a lot of residue behind.

Note: I read somewhere that Equip takes a bit more to blend in because it doesn’t contain any emulsifiers or artificial ingredients, which made sense.

Equip, when mixed with just plain water or unsweetened almond milk, is relatively thick and smooth. It’s definitely not grainy or chalky, which is most important when it comes to the consistency of protein powder.

The video below shows me mixing Equip Prime Protein (chocolate flavor) in a shaker bottle with around 8 oz of whole milk:

Taste

I was very pleasantly surprised with how rich and flavorful the chocolate flavor is. Equip offers a really delicious chocolate flavor that tastes very natural. It’s sweetened naturally with Stevia and doesn’t leave any weird aftertaste as you get with some protein powders that contain artificial sweeteners.

Equip’s protein powder has a much more natural flavor than most protein powders. I’m not going to lie and say that this is the best-tasting protein powder I’ve ever tasted, because it’s not, however, it’s the best-tasting clean protein powder I’ve ever had.

Versatility

I often use protein powders in recipes in addition to just using them for shakes, so it’s important to me that they work well for baking, and mixing into other foods like Greek yogurt, etc.

I have used Equip Prime Protein in a couple of recipes thus far and have had no complaints. Sometimes protein powders can make baked goods dry and crusty, but Equip held up really well throughout the baking process and produced a delicious, macro-friendly snack.

I have also used Equip mixed in with Greek yogurt and in a Ninja Creami recipe – both of which turned out as well. For the Ninja Creami, I found that I had to add a bit more liquid in between spins and that I had to spin the machine a time or two more to get the consistency right, but once I did, it tasted great!

I feel like Equip will do well in nearly any situation which I use protein powder.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Super clean, natural ingredients (only 3!)
  • 100% real food
  • 3rd party tested
  • Beef protein which is easy to digest and great for your gut
  • 21g of protein per serving
  • 100 calories per serving
  • Rich taste without any weird aftertaste
  • Smooth, creamy texture
  • 7 flavors to choose from
  • Equip has a whole line of supplements to choose from

Cons

  • You need to mix really vigorously for all of the powder to fully mix in
  • It’s not as sweet as some alternatives
  • Most of the flavors are pretty standard – if they want to compete with bigger protein powder brands, they might consider adding more flavors

Final Thoughts

Although my switch to Equip’s beef protein powder happened out of necessity, I can honestly say that I’m really happy that it did. I know that most protein powders are packed with artificial ingredients, sweeteners, and chemicals, but never had a strong enough disdain for those things to actually make the switch.

I know that choosing to consume Equip vs. other protein powders is more conducive to my overall health and wellness.

Equip Prime Protein doesn’t give me any tummy troubles, it tastes great, and it’s versatile enough to be used in all the ways that I enjoy using protein powders, which makes it a total win in my book.
